🎙️ Celebrating 88 Years of Legacy — The Ong Radio Story
Share
Step into a journey that began nearly a century ago . A story of passion, perseverance, and the pursuit of perfect sound.
In 1929, a young Mr. Ong Sean Kee, then working at a Dutch bank, took a leap of faith and founded Ong Radio Service along Aliwah Street. In those early years, businesses were started with little more than conviction and craftsmanship. By 1937, he relocated to a modest shophouse on Baghdad Street, a move that quietly marked the beginning of Ong Radio’s reputation as one of Singapore’s earliest high-end audio specialists.
A Legacy Forged in Resilience
During the war years, Mr. Ong navigated the challenges of the Japanese Occupation with dignity and wisdom. His resilience became the foundation of values that continue to guide Ong Radio today.
In 1945, his son Mr. Ong Siong Kwee inherited the mantle with nothing but a few tools and a steadfast spirit. Under the dim lights of Baghdad Street, he meticulously hand-built amplifiers, each one a symbol of endurance and passion, timeless traits that remain at the heart of every system we design.
Crafting Excellence Through the Generations
The 1950s marked a new era, as Ong Radio began importing some of the world’s most esteemed audio marques - Goodsell, Leak, Ortofon, Marantz, McIntosh, and Bozak. When Goodsell ceased production in 1963, what might have been a setback became yet another testament to the family’s resolve.
Guided by a philosophy of mastery over multitude, Mr. Ong refined the company’s focus to only the very best:
McIntosh, Bozak, and Stanton.
Faced with a pivotal choice between McIntosh and Marantz, he placed his faith in McIntosh, captivated by its exceptional engineering and uncompromising performance. This bold decision became a defining cornerstone of Ong Radio’s identity.
By 1965, Ong Radio brought in Stanton phono cartridges, revolutionising accuracy for audiophiles. In 1970, Norman Ong, the first of the third generation, joined the company, marking one of the most vibrant chapters in our history. Despite industry-wide shortages, the family travelled to the McIntosh laboratory in Binghamton, USA, securing equipment directly and cementing a lifelong partnership.
That same year, Ong Radio introduced the Stanton 4DQ 4-channel system, offering unprecedented realism to home audio, a milestone in Singapore’s audio evolution.
Shaping the Future of Sound
With innovation at the forefront:
- 1976: Ivan Ong joined, expanding expertise.
- 1979: Launched the revolutionary Audio Time Delay System, recreating the acoustics of a concert hall at home.
- 1982: Established the Turntable Clinic — revealing that 80% of “professionally aligned” turntables did not meet Ong Radio’s standards.
- 1983: Introduced the Amplifier Clinic, reinforcing our commitment to precision.
A Landmark Moment in 1988
In May 1988, Ong Radio unveiled its landmark showroom in Marina Square.
The late Mr. Gordon Gow, President of McIntosh, declared it:
“The most beautiful McIntosh showroom in the world.”
That year, Ong Radio received the rare privilege to display the McIntosh logo as its signboard, symbolising trust, heritage, and international recognition.
In 1990, a new management took over, Malcolm Ong, who introduced home intelligence, car audio, and automation technologies. Under his leadership, Ong Radio expanded to Plaza Singapura (1993) and The Adelphi (1994), later establishing its iconic presence at The Centrepoint.
